Bitten Gullberg awarded the Villum Young Investigator grant

Congratulations to Bitten Gullberg who has just been awarded DKK 5.5 million by the Villum Foundation through their Young Investigator Programme, funding her project "Exploring the infLuence of the Local envIronment on the Production of Stars In Starbursts" (ELLIPSIS).

Bitten Gullberg is a postdoc at DAWN; with her newly awarded Young Investigator grant of DKK 5.5 million, or roughly EUR 740,000, in the future she will be able to hire another postdoc and two PhD students for her project Exploring the infLuence of the Local envIronment on the Production of Stars In Starbursts (ELLIPSIS).

ELLIPSIS will study the most extreme star-forming galaxies in the history of the Universe. These dusty "starburst" galaxies produced stars roughly 10–100 times faster than the Milky Way and dominated the star formation at cosmic noon.

Starbursts are difficult for simulations to reproduce, and their roles in the evolution of galaxy are still unknown. By measuring the physical parameters of starbursts, ELLIPSIS will answer fundamental questions about the formation of stars at cosmic noon.
