Charlotte Mason 'RISES' the ERC Grant!

Charlotte

Charlotte Mason wants to push the boundaries of knowledge about structure formation in the early universe:

One of the longstanding goals of extragalactic astronomy has been to understand how the first stars and galaxies formed and powered the universe's final phase transition by re-ionizing intergalactic hydrogen. It has been discovered in the last two decades that this 'era of reionization' ended about a billion years after the Big Bang, but the process is still not very well understood.

The new James Webb Space Telescope now provides the opportunity to chart reionisation to its earliest stages and infer the properties of the first stars.

With her project (RISES), Charlotte Mason will analyse groundbreaking new datasets, with state-of-the-art statistical inference frameworks to link observations of the bright galaxies visible with the James Webb Space Telescope, with the evolution of the intergalactic medium.

- This grant (€ 1,497,350) will enable me to hire new two postdocs and a PhD student to join my group in order to focus on analysing and interpreting the new JWST data, says Charlotte Mason.

Danish Traditions & Culture

Culture Night in CPH and Halloween

Culture Night in CPH, Friday the 11th of October 2024: For more than 30 years, Culture Night has been one of Copenhagen's most well-attended cultural events. When the schools begin their autumn holiday the association Kulturnatten creates a festive evening, where the entire cultural life of the city works together to create joy and inspiration for all.

More than 200 museums, theatres, libraries, churches, ministries, and parks throughout the city welcome the public during Copenhagen's biggest annual one-day event, and the exciting events show that the city embraces many aspects of its cultural life. Read more here.

Halloween decorations and events in Copenhagen: If Wikipedia can be trusted, the American version of Halloween only took off in Denmark in the year 2000 and the production of real pumpkins has risen, with nearly a million sold every year in Denmark.

American-style Halloween has become popular not just because it references a deep pagan tradition, but because getting ready for it gives the kids something to do during the fall vacation (efterårsferie) in Denmark.

In Tivoli, the autumn season is kicked off with a specular Halloween decoration of the entire garden including spooky surprises, wonderful food to taste, and a popular pumpkin competition and exhibition. Read more here about Halloween in Tivoli.

The amusement park “Bakken” north of CPH will also for the third time have a special Halloween event in week 42 - read more about “Bakken” here.

Happy Halloween!
