Tivoli trip and farewell to our wonderful interns!

On Wednesday, 19 July 2024 we all went to 'Tivoli' for a fun and social day and to say a great farewell to our long-term interns (Olivia Cooper, Negin Khosravaninezhad, Aurélien Genin, and Matthieu Musy) that have been at DAWN for the last 4 months. It has been a pleasure to have had you onboard the "DAWN Spaceship" and we hope to see you all again soon.

Farewell to Charles Steinhardt

23 August 2024 we said farewell to our cherished colleague Charles Steinhardt, who is leaving for a faculty position at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Missouri. Charles has been a core member of DAWN from the beginning. In addition to his impressive scientific productivity, Charles has also been monumental in attracting and mentoring students; mentorships that were seen more as collaborations and often resulting in peer-reviewed publications.

We sent Charles off with cake, as a thank you for all the cake he has brought to DAWN throughout the years, as well as a few things for him not to forget Denmark.

Good luck in Missouri, Charles!

Meet Kimi - new member of the 1st Author Pub-Club!

Kimi 2

Hey, I'm Kimi Cardoso Kreilgaard from Denmark (and Brazil).

I joined DAWN as a master’s student exploring how we can infer measures of the escape fraction of ionising photons from galaxies (the topic of my paper). In December, I started as a PhD student in Charlotte Mason's group and my research will focus on using JWST data to investigate how we can better measure the high redshift galaxy population and explore different hypotheses for why star-formation may be different in the early Universe

Fun Fact: My first (and only) pet is a little green parrot called Polly. Like me, he can be a bit grumpy in the morning and likes to scream for attention - unfortunately, this means he is not allowed in my apartment in Copenhagen. We still keep in touch though: we Facetime every Sunday (with the technical assistance of my mom who he lives with in Jutland for now). Luckily, his kind can live up to 80 years and he is still a teenager, so I'm sure one day he can move in with me again and keep me entertained with his constant singing, crying, laughing and the occasional cursing.

The research presented in the paper began with my master's project which I also did with Charlotte. I did my masters in computational physics, so my motivation for the project mostly arose from my interest in the computational methods we were to employ. I had completed a few courses in statistics at the time and quite enjoyed it. Thus I was interested in doing a project where I could play around more with hierarchical Bayesian inference and how to implement it effectively. During the project, I rediscovered my joy for astrophysics and I am delighted to now work in this field and learn more about the Universe.

The escape fraction of ionising photons from galaxies is a key parameter for understanding how intergalactic hydrogen became reionised, but it has mostly been estimated for single galaxies or stacks of multiple galaxies. In this paper, we presented the first inference of the *distribution* of the ionising photon escape fraction, and we found that an exponentially decaying model is the best description of our data. This indicates that most galaxies in our sample exhibit very low escape fractions while predicting substantial ionising photon leakage for only a few galaxies, implying a range of optical depths in the ISM and/or time variability in ionising photon escape. The distribution of the escape fraction can be a vital test for simulations in understanding ionising photon leakage and is an important step to gain a complete picture of reionisation.

Danish Traditions & Culture

DHL Relay Race

DHL Relay Race: In 1980, the athletic club Sparta Chairman Niels Jørgen Holdt, was travelling in the USA and saw a commercial for a company-relay and decided that Denmark should also have this kind of event. Upon his return to Denmark, he began coordinating the DHL Relay Race which takes place every year and has become very popular.

The first DHL Relay Race was held in 1981 in the park called Fælledparken (just between the old Niels Bohr Institute and the new Niels Bohr Building). Later other greater Danish cities joined in with Aarhus in 1983 and Aalborg and Odense in 2003. The number of runners has also expanded greatly over the years. In the first DHL Relay Race, 134 teams participated with a total of 670 runners. In 2023 the number of teams was around 26,000 with over 130,000 runners/walkers! It makes it the largest Relay Race in the world.

When the DHL Relay is opened for the run, it is not only the baton that are handed over, but also a trust within the next runner, that will provide all the energy that the runners has and do ones ultimate best for the team. The symbolic in the event is precisely why the transport and logistical company DHL has been the main sponsor of this relay race for +30 years. Along with the motto: We are running a relay for our customers every day, all year - in the entire world.
