Abstract:

The earliest phase of galaxy evolution – roughly spanning the first billion years – is a critical period in the Universe’s history. This encompasses: the formation of the formation of the first stars; the transition from metal-free (population III) to metal enriched (Population II) star formation; early enrichment of the ISM including the first production of dust; the formation of the first super-massive black holes and AGN; and reionisation of the Universe’s neutral hydrogen.

In this talk I’ll introduce this period of the Universe’s history and then talk specifically about some of the simulation and observational work I’ve been involved in, including some early insights from JWST.
