Dr. Tayyaba Zafar from Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia is visiting the NBI on July 2-3 in connection with the international SPIE meeting at the Bella Center July 6-10.
She will give a 30-min talk Friday July 3 at 2pm in our open lunch area in the G-tower (info below). If you are interested in meeting with Tayyaba, please let Marianne or Helena know.

Title: Expanding the Discovery Space with Wide-Field Imaging & Spectroscopy on ELT Scales
Abstract:
ULTIMATE on Subaru and MANIFEST on GMT together define a powerful wide-field discovery space, combining deep imaging and highly multiplexed spectroscopy over 14 arcmin fields. ULTIMATE delivers wide-field, high-sensitivity imaging for target selection and spatial context, while MANIFEST enables flexible fibre-fed spectroscopy, including high-multiplex modes and integral field units, optimised for follow-up across large samples.
This synergy enables transformative surveys of galaxy evolution, resolved kinematics, and the interstellar medium across cosmic time, connecting statistical power with spatially resolved diagnostics. This talk will present the science drivers, instrument concepts, and survey strategies for wide-field follow-up at scale.
Short Bio:
Dr. Zafar obtained her PhD from NBI/DARK in 2011 and has since held a research position at Laboratorie d’Astrophysique de Marseille (LAM), a postdoctoral fellowship at the European Southern Observatory in Munich before she moved to Australia in 2015 as a research scientist at Australian Astronomical Optics in Sydney. Since 2018 she has held a joint faculty position at AAO and Macquarie University and in 2023 she became a senior lecturer at the School of Mathematical & Physical Sciences at Macquarie University.
