Astro Seminar - Dr. Alberto Vecchio

June 8, 2026

Dear all,

We will have our last Astro Seminar before the upcoming summer next Monday, June 8, at 14:15 in Aud. A. The speaker will be Dr. Alberto Vecchio (University of Birmingham), who will talk about “The Populations of Compact Binaries with Present and Future Gravitational-Wave Surveys.”

Title: The Populations of Compact Binaries with Present and Future Gravitational-Wave Surveys

Abstract: The number of gravitational-wave detected compact binaries of neutron stars and black holes has grown to almost 400. The most recent observations of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA gravitational-wave detector network suggest that several astrophysical formation and evolution pathways are likely responsible for the systems that have been observed. However, disentangling their contributions to the overall population remains a significant challenge. I will summarise the results from the latest gravitational-wave catalogue (GWTC-5) and discuss the opportunities and challenges involved in shedding new light on the populations of these objects through future observations with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA).
